March 2012 – Family and Ministry Update

Dear prayer partners,

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Ministry in US

It was God’s grace that we were upgraded to business class from Brussels to Newark and we had a wonderful journey.  It was wonderful as God enabled us to be multi-faceted ministry in US.

Plainsboro bible study

On 2 March God enabled me to speak in the Plainsboro bible study group from the biblical text:  Everyone did as they saw fit in the book of Judges.  The friends (Babu Samuel and Suhas Kamble and others) there helped me to replace by ageing laptop computer.

Cornerstone Fellowship

On 4 Sunday God enabled me to speak in Cornerstone Fellowship in Philadelphia.  Pastor Visuvasam Dhanaraj and his family invited us.  The multi-cultural and multi-national fellowship has grown in the last few months.  Praise the Lord.

Jesus Family Ministries – women, fasting prayer

On 10 March, God enabled me to teach on the topic “Spiritual Warfare” in the Jesus Family Ministries church.  Pastor Oswin and Sheeba Michael gave us these wonderful opportunity.  Rosy also spoke on conference call several times as invited by Sheeba.  There was great feedback for Rosy’s messages.

February 2012 – Family and Ministry Update

Dear prayer partners,

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

High Calling?

Suddenly doctors discovered that my blood sugar is very high.  Now I have High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol and High Sugar; may be a high price to pay to fulfill the High Calling of extensive global ministry.

Salem Bible Standard Church

It was wonderful to be with Pastor Pandian of Bible Standard Church (4-5 February) teaching leaders of the congregation.  Many shared that they were richly blessed and motivated to be leaders in the community.  On the Sunday evening, I visited Yercaud, dubbed as poor people’s Ooty.

Global Urban Vision – March 2012

I India:

  1. Dowry death: One bride burnt every hour: In a crime that is prevalent only in India, greedy husbands and his relatives harass the newly wed bride for getting more dowry, and often kill her in the process. And, very often, she is burnt alive. This horror is therefore called bride-burning or in official terms, dowry death. In 2010, there were 8391 reported cases of dowry death in the country. That works out to a shocking one death every hour approximately. Bride-burning is on the increase - just a decade ago, in 2000, there were 6995 cases. Dowry is an ancient tradition among the upper castes but its spread among all sections of society probably in the late nineteenth century. With increasing commercialization this acquired a new meaning - it became an opportunity for men and their families to get their hands on cash, jewellery, durables, and various other commodities. Although the government prohibited dowry through legislation in 1961, it was never implemented properly. Prohibition officers were supposed to have been appointed in each district, taking the battle to the grassroots but nothing happened. And, the tide of greed driven murder of young brides continued unabated. In 1986, under huge pressure from the women's movement, the Indian penal Code was amended to include section 304B, specifically against murder following harassment for dowry. Section 498A was added to define harassment and cruelty by husbands and his relatives. Strangely this too has not had much effect. Laxity of the government machinery can be one reason for the failure of legal measures. After all, conviction rates in bride burning cases have dipped from an already weak 37% in 2000 to 34% in 2010. In section 498A cases, the conviction rates are even lower: just 19%, although reported cases were 94,000 in 2010. But perhaps the primary reason for spread of this cancer has been the almost complete absence of any public campaign or mobilization against it for the past 25 years. As a result, girls are considered a burden on the parents, families go bankrupt trying to get their daughters married off, choice in forming relations is frowned upon and thousands - maybe lakhs - of young women suffer violence silently behind closed doors.  (Subodh Varma, (Source accessed on 27 January 2012.)
Please Pray:
  1. That dowry system may be rooted out in Indian marriages
  2. Indian families may built on foundation of love instead of money and greed

Global Urban Vision – February 2012

I           India

Man peeps out of car, has chain snatched: A man lost his gold chain in a freak incident at Choolaimedu on 25 December. In the afternoon, police said, Anbu (47), an employee of a private company, was driving towards Anna Nagar along Nelson Manickam Road when a man, who had apparently been following Anbu's car closely, slammed his bike at the car. An angry Anbu rolled down the window and peeped out to see who had banged his car. Taking the opportunity, the robber came close, snatched Anbu's four-sovereign gold chain and fled.
Before Anbu could react, the man had driven away. The Choolaimedu police registered a case and began investigations. (Source accessed on 27 December 2011.)

Please Pray:
  • For the safety of travelers as thieves are increasing day by day.
  • For the wisdom on the part of travelers while they are carrying and wearing valuable things.
  • For people to opt for simple lifestyle.
